Song in the Night

Darkness isn’t from God.

Read that again.

“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’” John‬ ‭8‬:‭12‬ ‭NLT‬‬ That’s not a flippant statement. That’s a promise. Claim it.

A profound thought came to me today: sin’s existence is not because of anything you or I have done, but because of who the devil is and because of the devil’s blasphemous choice to try to exalt himself above God. The great news is: God’s grace, by Jesus’ death on the cross, is what saves us from being the devil’s permanent collateral damage. That doesn’t mean we won’t have trials and tribulations walking in the wake of the fall. It means: the victory over our eternal life and salvation happened at the cross many, many years ago. It’s a done deal. A sealed transaction. A known outcome for those of us surviving the mess. All we have to do is tell the devil he’s not wanted. Literally, call out the name “Jesus.” Why?

Because “Jesus came and told his disciples, ‘I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.’” Matthew‬ ‭28‬:‭18‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“[Jesus] humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave Him the name above all other names, thatat the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians‬ ‭2‬:‭8‬-‭11‬ ‭NLT‬‬

The devil CAN NOT and WILL NOT remain standing in the presence of Jesus. Jesus’ name alone is that powerful! And it’s at our disposal. Jesus wants us to call on Him, for He alone has the power to save. (James 4:12)

In 2020, I started writing a song God placed on my heart. Interestingly enough, I finished it two weeks before Covid almost took my life a year later. When struggling to breathe, I’d stand in the shower and hum these words in my head, since the devil had temporarily stolen my actual vocal cords. These are the words that helped me separate the truth from the lies. I pray they will help you do the same.

“When shadows creep in and your fear starts to win,
that’s not God.

When darkness and gloom drown the light in the room,
that’s not God.

When you’re down on your face,
and you can’t feel His grace,
and that ache in your heart says to hide,

rise above in His love,
know that you are enough,
tell the devil you’re over his lies.

That’s not God;
that’s not God;
that’s not God!”
