Purification of Skin Diseases

Leviticus 14 & 15

“The persons being purified must then wash their clothes, shave off all their hair, and bathe themselves in water….” Leviticus‬ ‭14‬:‭8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Old Testament texts like these have always confused me, probably because the ritual doesn’t seem rational. I’m guessing I’m not the only person who has thought, “If a skin disease is only on your hip or hand, why would you be required to shave your head?” And, “Did this requirement apply to women, too? Or just the men, as it specifies in a further text about shaving beards, too?” Doesn’t make much sense with the limited amount of knowledge I presently have on the subject, but I’m sure God had His reasons. Guess I’m going to have to delve into the history books if I want to learn more.
