Fighting Heavy Waves
“Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water.” Matthew 14:24-25 NLT
As most people can testify, the worst part of any storm is in the middle of the night–those dubious hours where fevers spike, darkness magnifies hidden fears, and you can’t see any flicker of light or hope. Life feels heavier. Burdens seem unbearable, and the smallest problems can present themselves as unmanageable. Yet, that’s exactly when Jesus showed up for the disciples. Smack dab in the center of irrational thoughts loosening their grip on faith. That instant when pounding waves began spurring thoughts of drowning. The moment flashes of lightning started illuminating pending doom. How reassuring it must have been to hear Jesus’ voice call out in the middle of the unknown. “…Don’t be afraid. …Take courage. I am here!'” Matthew 14:27 NLT Oh, those precious words: I AM HERE! As Louisa M. R. Stead penned in 1882, “Oh, for grace to trust Him more.”
