Righteous Indignation

“Indignation against evil is an essential element of goodness.” – Nicky Gumbel

Indignation over an action is not the same as hating the person carrying out the injustice or who is doing wrong.

Oxford Languages defines indignation as “feeling or showing anger or annoyance at what is perceived as unfair treatment.” Even Jesus showed righteous indignation when He entered the temple and overthrew the tables, yet He didn’t sin while standing up against evil. (Matthew 21: 12)

As John Stuart Mills so eloquently states: “Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.” God asks us to follow His example and protect the oppressed and vulnerable among us. “He ensures that orphans and widows receive justice. He shows love to the foreigners living among you and gives them food and clothing. So you, too, must show love to foreigners, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.” Deuteronomy 10:18-19 NLT
